Once When We Were Walking...

submitted by Annie J. Bridley

I live in Pine City, Minnesota. We were trying to sell our house and during the times the people came to view our house I went for walks. Though I've lived in Pine City my whole life there are some parts of the town I'd never seen. For example, The Cemetary. I was walking down the street from my house; straight, left, straight, left and straight; I ended up at the cemetary. I knew for a fact my neighbor, Rita, who had a heart attack one winter and froze in the snow, was buried here. So I went searching for her grave. Before I found it I entered the part of the cemetary where the children were buried. I was looking at a spot on the grass as though in a trance and saw that piece of earth jump. Just slightly, so it looked like a little bump in the ground. I continued staring at it and I heard shrill laughing, high-pitched screaming and the sound of someone moaning, as though in great pain. A tiny fist appeared from the ground, then a second...I woke up in the hospital. I had tiny claw marks on my arms and legs, and I had stitches in my forehead. No one knows what happened to this very day...
